The DITF have their roots in Reutlingen, a town with a long tradition of professional training in textiles and related research. A weaving school was founded here in 1855 on the initiative of industry representatives, the city of Reutlingen and the Kingdom of Württemberg, which spawned a technical school for spinning, weaving and warp knitting in 1891. Named after its long-standing director, the Otto-Johanssen Technikum set the pace for the development of the textile industry in Southern Germany. A testing authority was added in 1910 followed by a research institute in 1921.
